The next monthly meeting of the Region Referee Administrators will be held Thursday, June 13, at 7:00 p.m. This meeting is held at the Region 13 Clubhouse located at 711 W. Woodbury Road, Unit E, Altadena, California. Food will be served.

Area 1-C Intermediate & Advanced Coaching Classes

Area 1-C is pleased to host Intermediate and Advanced Coaching classes during the weekend of Friday, May 31st through Sunday, June 2nd at Arcadia High School. Information regarding the classes, including cost, can be found on the informational flyer linked here. Updated Area 1-C Int. & Adv. Coaching Classes Please note that in order to take the Intermediate course you must have already obtained your U12 certification and in order to take the Advanced course you must have already obtained your Intermediate certification.

In memory of Referee Ricardo Portillo

The following email was sent by Dave Jones, Past Region Referee Administrator for Region 60, Alhambra/Monterey Park. It is well stated and should speak to all of us.

By now, you have probably all heard the tragic story of Ricardo Portillo, a soccer referee in Utah, who was punched by a player, and died as a result. If you’re not familiar with the story, please read the following.

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is that something like that can’t happen here. I want to believe that’s true.

But I’m sure Ricardo Portillo’s league believed the same thing. And I’m sure it never occurred to him to think he might be killed doing one of the things he loved most in life.

This should be a wake up call to us all that “Zero Tolerance” aren’t just two words that look good next to each other in our policy statements.

We are well positioned with AYSO’s theme of “Respect starts with me.” I believe we should reinforce that theme, and Zero Tolerance, at all volunteer meetings. We need to mentor our referees to help them understand how to deal with dissent from both players and the Touchline. And we need to support them, and all volunteers 100%.

And with the 2013 season right around the corner, now is the time to start planning.
